Company's smartphone use and its effect on employee's well-being: a diary study

In recent years, the use of new technologies has grown exponentially. Nowadays, it is present in all areas of our lives, including the work environment. From this perspective, it has begun to analyze the effect of company’s smartphone use during working hours on employees. For this, a sample of 104 employees from various sectors was used, through a daily diary study with two levels of analysis (Level 1: Day; Level 2: Person). The multilevel analyses show that the daily use of the smartphone during non-working hours was positively related to daily work-family conflict. Similarly, a significant relationship was found between smartphone use and higher burnout levels, as well as lower engagement scores. Finally, it was found that work-family conflict mediated the relationship between smartphone use and levels of both engagement and burnout during the next day. Theoretical and practical implications are in line with defining clear barriers between work and personal domain, in order to increase employee’s well-being.
