The relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and job performance: an exploratory analysis of «EI-job achievement» from perspective of strategic human resources management

Abstract

The present study examines the construct of emotional intelligence (EI) and its relationship to job performance. Despite the popularity of EI in general, empirical researches are still needed to specify the degree of relationship between EI and job performance. In this context, this paper analyzes this relationship between providing empirical evidences that are relevant to the use of EI as a strategic issue of human resources management. In the sample of study included 486 employees of telecommunication sector. The Mayer-Salovey Caruso's Emotional Intelligence Test has been used as the main technique for assessing EI. Data from 360 degree work performance Appraisal were included in the analysis. In addition, the dimensions of «big five traits of personality» and the «interpersonal facilitation» have been used to control the effects of EI on job performance. The correlation analysis and regression analysis were used as primary data analysis techniques. The results demonstrate the existence of significant relationship between EI and job performance. In the same line, this research confirms that the EI is a good predictor of job performance. Some practical implications of the relation between EI and job performance on human resources management have been suggested. Furthermore, some new trends for future research on the relationship between EI and job performance have been discussed.
