Abstract

This work shows the relative importance of the predictors general intelligence, personality factors and emotional intelligence in the determination of success at the beginning of the professional career. For this purpose, the relationships between the following predictors are analyzed: perceived emotional intelligence, measured by the Trait Meta-Mood Scale questionnaire (TMMS-24), general intelligence, assessed by the Cattell factor «g» test, scale 2, personality, evaluated through the NEO-FFI, and also some extrinsic and intrinsic indicators of professional success, in a sample of 130 graduates who are at the beginning of their professional careers. Results obtained by hierarchical regression analysis indicate that, regarding the measures for professional success used, the perceived emotional intelligence shows a greater relationship and makes a greater contribution to the prediction of the criteria than general intelligence and personality. Implications of these results both for the scientific community and for the professional community, especially in the field of selection, training and people development, are discussed.
