Abstract

In an increasingly turbulent and competitive environment organizational learning capability has been identified as a strategic mechanism for achieving continued organizational success. As a result, organizations and academics are working to find ways of creating work environments with high learning capacity. However, clear consensus is yet to come on the most effective ways available to organizations to develop their learning capacity. In this study we propose altruism and organizational trust as antecedents of organizational learning capability. To test our hypotheses we applied the structural equation technique to data from a survey of Spanish firms with recognized excellence in human resource management. The results of this research show that in these firms, altruism may favor learning capacity both directly and indirectly (through organizational trust). These findings show that altruism provides organizations with a value that enables them to enhance their learning capacity.
