Interacción entre prácticas de flexibilidad laboral externa e interna: un análisis empírico en el caso español

Desde la perspectiva contingente en la gestión estratégica de los recursos humanos se defiende que, dadas las interacciones existentes entre las prácticas de un sistema de gestión de los recursos humanos, es necesario observar su efecto conjunto sobre el desempeño empresarial. Actualmente, existe un especial énfasis en el análisis de las prácticas referidas a la flexibilidad laboral, sus modalidades e impacto en la competitividad empresarial. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el efecto de la temporalidad contractual, práctica representativa de la flexibilidad laboral externa, sobre el desempeño empresarial en función del grado de inversión en formación y del nivel educativo de los recursos humanos, prácticas ambas relacionadas con la flexibilidad laboral interna. A pesar del uso generalizado de los contratos temporales en España, existe una destacada ausencia de análisis empíricos sobre este tema. En este estudio utilizamos la Encuesta sobre Estrategias Empresariales (ESEE) del Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología sobre una amplia muestra de 1.403 empresas industriales españolas. Asimismo, examinamos este efecto sobre distintos indicadores de desempeño empresarial. Los resultados demuestran que el efecto de la flexibilidad externa sobre el desempeño empresarial depende del grado de flexibilidad interna. En particular, prevalece un efecto sustitutivo entre ambos tipos de flexibilidad laboral. Su uso simultáneo no produce los mayores beneficios.
