Strength-based micro-coaching interventions for human resources development

Abstract

Strength-based coaching is framed within the scientific movement of positive psychology and establishes the identification, development, and use of strengths as a means to promote positive results in both persons and organizations. The main goal of this study is to describe the potential benefits that this perspective can bring to human resources development, specifically in terms of the optimization of worker’s psychosocial health and performance presenting empirical results, supporting its efficacy in a controlled study conducted in a automotive manufacturing firm. Sixty workers without executive or management responsibilities participated in a strength-based micro-coaching program that consisted of a group workshop and three individual coaching sessions. Participants were distributed between two groups (experimental and control-waiting list), and both their direct supervisors and themselves responded an evaluation questionnaire in three different times (PRE-POST-FUP). Both quantitative and qualitative results indicated that the program had a positive impact on participants work engagement, psychological capital, and in/extra-role performance. Practical implications suggest that strength-based coaching interventions are an effective strategy for human resources management and development within organizations.
